Piper nigrum
Piper nigrum is a tropical vine in the pepper family. Native to southeastern India, it is cultivated in many tropical countries.
It reaches up to 15 m in height.
It is cultivated for its fruit, which yields the well-known spice pepper. It has also long been known as a houseplant.
The leaves are slightly leathery, evergreen, slightly lighter underneath, petiolated, ovate, and pointed.
The flowers are clustered in spike-shaped inflorescences. Small, aquamarine-white, with two stamens and one pistil.
The fruits are spherical, 0.5 cm in diameter. Initially green, later reddish or yellow-reddish, and finally black. 20-30 seeds are collected per inflorescence.
