Prunus avium
Prunus avium, also known as bird cherry or cherry, is a majestic deciduous tree native to Europe and Western Asia.
It reaches approximately 20 meters in height.
The leaves are elliptical or obovate with a pointed tip and serrated margins. They are thin and delicate, smooth on top and paler underneath, and have tufts of hairs at the vein axils. In autumn, these leaves turn a striking yellow or orange-red color.
The flowers are white, hermaphrodite, gathered in corymbs on long stalks, which appear from April to May, just before the leaves emerge.
The fruits are small, spherical drupes that can be various shades of red, sometimes yellow or almost black. They are usually sweet, and their flesh is juicy. These fruits are suitable for eating raw, but also for preserves such as juices, jellies, jams, and liqueurs.
Prunus avium grows best in fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. It prefers a sunny, warm location, sheltered from frosty winds.
It is completely frost-hardy.
