Phoenix dactylifera
Phoenix dactylifera is a species of plant in the Arecaceae family. It does not occur in the wild, but is cultivated in many countries around the world.
It reaches a height of up to 25 meters.
The leaves are pinnate, stiff. A single leaf consists of lanceolate, pointed leaflets, which can number up to 150. The leaves at the top of the crown are erect, while the lower ones are pendulous.
The small, inconspicuous flowers are gathered in a broom-like, branched inflorescence. The male inflorescence has about 2,000 flowers, the female has fewer.
The fruit, called dates, is a red-yellow drupe containing an elongated, brown seed.
