Ceiba pentandra Ceiba pentandra is a tree native to South and Central America and Mexico. It grows up to 60-70 meters tall. The leaves are palmate, composed of 5 to 9 leaflets. The flowers have 5 erect stamens and pink petals. The flowers open at night and emit a strong fragrance that attracts nocturnal animals. The fruit is an ovoid capsule. A mature tree produces several hundred of these capsules. The seeds within the capsule are surrounded by a downy, yellowish fiber composed of lignin and cellulose.
