Calycanthus floridus

Calycanthus floridus is a shrub native to southeastern North America. It grows up to 3 meters tall.

The flowers, bark, shoots, and even the roots of the Calycanthus fragrans produce an intense strawberry-scented aroma!

The plant is sometimes called the strawberry tree in America because of its fragrant flowers.

The red flowers, 5 cm in diameter, have a rather strong strawberry scent. It blooms from June to July.

The elliptical and elongated fruit contains brown nuts.

The ovate leaves, up to 12 cm long, are purple, later gray-green, and turn yellow in autumn.

Calycanthus floridus has no special soil requirements. It prefers sunny or partly sunny locations, sheltered from the wind. Frost-resistant to -26°C.

Seed Handling:

Gently scrape or cut a section of the hard seed coat with a sharp knife or sandpaper, being careful not to damage the interior.

Cover the seeds with warm water and let them soak for 24 hours. Mix the soaked seeds with damp sand, peat, or wrap them in a damp paper towel. Place the entire package in a bag or container and store in the refrigerator. Keep them there for 60 to 90 days. Regularly check the soil for moisture and for signs of mold.
