Nelumbo nucifera
Nelumbo nucifera is a perennial plant in the Nelumbonaceae family. It grows wild in Asia and is also widespread in other regions of the world.
It reaches up to 1.8 m (6 ft) tall.
Young leaves float on water, but older leaves rise up to 1.5 m (5 ft) above the surface. They are disc-shaped and sunken in the center. They reach 30–90 cm (12–35 in) across and are covered with wax.
Flowers are single, pink or white, fragrant, and range from 12–30 cm (4–12 in) in diameter. Both stamens and pistils are numerous. The latter are sunken in a distinctive receptacle. Both flowers and leaves rise above the waterline.
Fruits are oval and contained in a brown receptacle.
