Swietenia mahagoni

Swietenia mahagoni is a species of deciduous tree in the Meliaceae family. It is native to Central America and the Caribbean.

It reaches up to 20 meters in height.

Young leaves are red, later turning light to very dark green. The leaflets are elliptically arranged and have sharp tips. They curl in the opposite direction, and their surface has a characteristic glossy sheen.

The flowers are greenish-yellow, gathered in naked panicles, shorter than the leaves.

The fruit is a light brown seed capsule that stands upright.

Each valve releases approximately 20 flat, brown, winged seeds.

Seed Handling Instructions:

Remove the wings from the seeds and then soak them in lukewarm water for 24 hours.

Use small pots or trays with drainage holes in the bottom. Ensure water can drain freely to prevent waterlogging.

Use well-draining soil to ensure proper germination conditions.

Place the seeds in the prepared soil.

Provide a location in full sun or light shade.
