Juglans nigra
Juglans nigra is a species of tree native to North America in the central and eastern United States.
It reaches up to 35 m in height.
The leaves consist of 10–23 leaflets, which are oblong-ovate, rounded at the base, sharp-topped, and finely serrated. Young leaflets are hairy on both sides, older leaves only on the underside.
Male flowers are borne in conical, thick, protruding catkins, borne in groups of 2–5 on previous year's shoots. Female flowers are inconspicuous, greenish, and always five at the tips of branches.
The fruit is a large, spherical drupe with a thick, green, aromatic outer covering that splits open upon ripening, revealing a hard, ribbed shell containing the edible seed.
Juglans nigra grows best in fertile, well-drained, and deep soil.
It prefers a sunny location.
It is frost-resistant but sensitive to late spring frosts, so choosing a location sheltered from the wind is important.
Every order is accompanied by a receipt or (upon request) an invoice, a delivery note compliant with WIORiN requirements, and a plant passport, if required.
The seeds we offer are of high quality and intended for both nurseries and amateurs.
Seed Handling Instructions:
The seeds require cold stratification for approximately 3-4 months at 1-5°C (33-41°F), which can be done in the refrigerator by mixing the seeds with moist sand. After stratification, sow the seeds in spring in the ground or in pots to a depth of approximately 2.5-5 cm (1-2 inches).
Provide well-drained soil, a sunny location, and constant moisture. Avoid overwatering.
