Rhamnus catharticus

Rhamnus catharticus is a shrub or low tree with thorny branches, native to Europe, northwest Africa, and western Asia.

It grows up to 6 meters tall.

The leaves are elliptical-ovate with serrated edges. They are dark green above and light green below.

The flowers are small, yellowish-green, clustered in the leaf axils.

The fruit is a spherical, black drupe that ripens in September.

Rhamnus catharticus grows best in sunny or partially shaded locations. It prefers well-drained, fertile, moderately moist, neutral to alkaline soil, rich in calcium. It prefers sunny or partially shaded locations. It is frost-hardy.
