Gossypium herbaceum
Gossypium herbaceum is a perennial plant in the mallow family. It grows wild in Africa and is also cultivated in other African countries and some Asian countries.
It reaches up to 1.5 m in height.
The plant is used to produce the fiber known as cotton.
The leaves are green, long-stalked, 3-7-lobed, and hairy.
The flowers are small, yellow, with a purple center. They have a persistent calyx that completely encloses the flower buds. The stamens are numerous, fused into a tube surrounding the pistil.
The fruit is a capsule containing numerous seeds abundantly furnished with hairs, which act as a flight apparatus and allow the seeds to be carried by the wind over long distances.
