Pinus massoniana
Pinus massoniana is a species of evergreen conifer native to central and southern China, Taiwan, and northern Vietnam. It is one of the most important commercial trees in China, valued for its rapid growth, wood quality, and adaptability.
It reaches up to 25–45 meters in height.
Young trees have a conical crown, which with age becomes broad, rounded, or umbrella-shaped, with long, spreading branches. At the base of the trunk, the bark is thick, gray-brown, and deeply fissured, while at the top of the trunk and on the branches, it is thin, scaly, and reddish-orange.
The needles are slender, light green, and slightly twisted. They are 12–20 cm long.
The cones are small, ovate, and brown. They mature in the second year and open to release the seeds.
Pinus massoniana grows best in acidic, well-drained, sandy, or clay soils. It is tolerant of poor soils and periodic drought.
Frost hardy to -15°C.
