Crataegus coccinea

Crataegus coccinea is a thorny, large shrub or small tree native to North America.

It reaches 5 to 8 meters in height.

The broad, ovate, shallowly lobed leaves with sharply and doubly serrated edges turn beautiful shades of yellow and red in autumn.

The white flowers, clustered in dense umbels, appear in late spring.

The spherical, intensely scarlet-red fruits, up to 2 cm in diameter, are edible, although quite tart when eaten raw – ideal for preserves, jams, and liqueurs.

Crataegus coccinea grows best in moderately moist, well-drained, and calcium-rich soil. It prefers a sunny location.

Each order is accompanied by a receipt or (upon request) an invoice, a delivery note compliant with WIORiN requirements, and a plant passport, if required.

Seed Handling Instructions:

Seeds require stratification. Place the seeds in a container with moist sand. Store them in a cool place at 0-5°C for two years. The sand must be kept slightly moist. After 24 months, in spring, sow the seeds in a cold frame or pots. Use a well-draining mix of compost, peat, and sand. Keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering.
