Swietenia mahagoni is a species of deciduous tree from the Meliaceae family. It comes from Central America and the Caribbean Sea basin.
It reaches up to 20 meters in height
Young leaves are red, and later they turn green from a light to very dark shade. The leaves are arranged elliptically and have sharp ends. They twist in the opposite direction, and their surface is characteristically shiny.
The flowers are greenish-yellow, gathered in naked panicles, shorter than the leaves.
The fruit is a light brown seed capsule that stands upright.
Each valve releases about 20 flat, brown, winged seeds.
