Piper nigrum

 

Piper nigrum is a tropical vine from the pepper family. It comes from southeastern India and is cultivated in many countries of the tropical zone.
It reaches a height of up to 15 m.
It is cultivated for its fruits, from which the well-known spice pepper is obtained. It has also long been known as a houseplant.
Leaves are slightly leathery, evergreen, slightly lighter underneath, petiolate, ovate, pointed.
Flowers gathered in spike-shaped inflorescences. Small, light green-white, with two stamens and one pistil.
Fruits are spherical, 0.5 cm in diameter. Initially green, later reddish or yellow-reddish and finally black. Collected in 20-30 in a fruit cluster.
