Mucuna bracteata is a tropical legume native to Africa and tropical Asia, widely naturalized and cultivated.
It reaches up to 15 m in length.
Leaves are tripinnate, ovate. The sides of the leaves are often strongly furrowed, and the tips are pointed.
In young specimens, there are hairs on both sides of the leaves.
The flower heads are in the form of axially arranged panicles. They are from 15 cm to 30 cm long and have two, three or many flowers, which can be white, lavender or purple.
Legume fruits 4–13 cm long. There is a stripe along the entire length, and the scale is covered with loose, orange hairs. The pods contain up to seven seeds, which are shiny, black or brown, flattened seeds 1–1.9 cm long
