Gossypium herbaceum is a perennial from the mallow family. It grows wild in Africa, and is also cultivated in other African countries and some Asian countries.
It reaches up to 1.5 m in height.

Green, long-stalked, 3-7-lobed, hairy leaves.
Small, yellow flowers with a purple center. They have a durable calyx that completely covers the flower buds. Numerous stamens, fused into a tube surrounding the pistil.
The fruit is a capsule with numerous seeds abundantly equipped with hairs, which act as a flight apparatus and allow the seeds to be carried by the wind over long distances.
