Aesculus hippocastanum

Aesculus hippocastanum is a large deciduous tree native to the Balkan Peninsula.

It grows to a height of 20-30 meters.

The leaves are large, lanceolate or obovate, consisting of 5-7 leaflets.

The flowers are arranged in impressive, erect panicles. They have white petals with characteristic yellow or red spots at the base.

The fruit is a spiny capsule containing shiny, brown seeds called chestnuts.
Aesculus hippocastanum requires fertile, well-drained soil. It prefers a sunny location.

It is completely frost-hardy.
